In my paintings, I render in colour the stories of the physical and emotional landscapes that formed my experience of being born in Greece and then growing up in England and Cyprus.

The actual process of my painting relates to this theme, as I use mixed media, building up and scraping back areas of paint to capture the atmosphere, mass, and light of the landscapes I am trying to represent. In my series ‘The Gloaming,’ I explore ways of bringing these landscapes together and play with the similarities and contrasts: How being caught between two time perspectives – the Eastern Mediterranean is two hours ahead of England – two different kinds of light, two different cultures, results in both a feeling of richness and diversity of experience as well as a search for rootedness in the moment and in space.

Dusk and the changes in light between sunset and darkness, capture this feeling of ‘homelessness’ and search for ‘home.’ On the other hand, in the plays of light, in exploring ways of translating experiences and representing them in paint on the canvas, there is a liberating beauty too. In my ‘Ithaca’ series, inspired by the Greek Poet Konstantinos Kavafis’ poem ‘Ithaca,’ I follow the theme further exploring different possibilities of rootedness/rootlessness and the riches of the search for home.

My later series, ‘Time and Tide’ takes the theme further to a broader exploration of the temporal nature of human experience and its relationship with nature and the recent addition of gold leaf and metal in my work is inspired by some time spent in Venice, visiting the Biennale and Greek iconography.

Today my brain feels full of fog, seriously. I had decided last night to go into Aberystwyth to get some of my photos of lake Tal- Y-Llyn printed. I was aware of a similar place in Machynlleth but thought I might as well go further afield and make a morning of it. Of course I keep forgetting that in Wales further afield could involve me making a day of it as the winding roads do slow you (well...me) down considerably. Factor into that that it rained cataclysmically on the way there and you can imagine....anyone stuck behind me negotiating those bends without being able to see much was probably cursing me...
By the time I had got to Aberystwyth, and saw how busy it was, I changed my mind and drove straight back to Machynlleth ( yep...what on earth?, honestly I have days like this quite a lot). It was better weather on the way back and I managed to catch glimpses of epic views. I went to the printers there, but they were closing in 15 mins so I have to try again tomorrow....I decided while I was there to go to the co-op but once in there I just wandered aimlessly through the aisles no doubt getting in serious shoppers way, unable to think of what I should get. Back at the studio, of course I thought of what I could get.
Anyway, on my walks I have been collecting small bits of slate to add into my paintings in a different way than I normally do back home.

I am delighted to have been chosen to exhibit with The Free Painters and Sculptors. This group has a unique place in British art. The group was founded in 1952 and was originally associated with the ICA. The 4 paintings chosen are Ithaca, Greek from Ancient Times, Welsh Hill Misty Morning and An Elaborate Dream and I am looking forward to seeing them in the exhibition with the rest of the artists and members of this group. The exhibition will be held at the Menier Gallery, 51 Southwark Street and runs from 2-13th Dec.

Private View is on 2nd Dec 6-9pm so please come along!

My latest paintings are a result of shutting myself away in my studio for just over 2 weeks. I didnt see anyone and only left the house when absolutely necessary. It was painfully maddening and I missed human contact but it needed to be done as being so busy with other commitments was really showing in the quality of my work. The fact that I also had an exhibition date looming propelled me into action.  I may have forgotten how to be around other human beings when I re-emerged into the world but at least I have some new paintings I am happy to show. Hooray!
